Xcode Cloud Alternative: Pricing vs a Dedicated Mac mini

Prices checked by the MacMetro team

If your builds fit in the 25 compute hours Apple includes each month, stay on Xcode Cloud. Past that, 250 hours costs $99.99 a month, about the same as a dedicated Apple M6 Mac mini from MacMetro at $99. The Mac is the better buy when you want any CI system, caches that persist between builds, or a Mac you can also log into.

We run MacMetro, so we have a stake in this. The Xcode Cloud and GitHub prices come from Apple and GitHub, linked at the bottom.

Xcode Cloud compute hours need an Apple Developer Program membership. GitHub runners in public repositories are free. GitHub minutes are rounded up per job.

When Is Xcode Cloud the Better Pick?

When your app is small enough that builds and tests fit in 25 hours a month. That is free with the developer membership you already pay for.

Xcode Cloud also wins on setup. You turn it on in Xcode, it sends builds to TestFlight, and you never patch a machine. It also tests on several device types in parallel, so a full test run finishes sooner than on one Mac.

When Does a Dedicated Mac Make More Sense?

Apple deletes each Xcode Cloud build environment when the build finishes. On a dedicated Mac, DerivedData, Swift packages, and CocoaPods stay on disk between builds, so an incremental build can skip work it already did.

Above 250 hours, Xcode Cloud jumps to $399.99 a month for 1,000 hours. For that money you could run 4 MacMetro Base Macs, or 2 Premium Macs with 24 GB of memory each.

A dedicated Mac also runs things Xcode Cloud doesn't: a GitLab or Jenkins agent, builds for apps outside App Store Connect, a nightly job, or a Screen Sharing session when you need to debug a simulator by hand.

What About GitHub Actions macOS Runners?

A GitHub-hosted macOS runner costs $0.062 a minute in a private repository. $99 covers about 1,596 minutes, which is roughly 159 ten-minute builds a month. Past that point, a self-hosted runner on a MacMetro Mac costs less, because GitHub doesn't charge for minutes on self-hosted runners.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Xcode Cloud cost?

Apple Developer Program membership includes 25 compute hours a month. More costs $49.99 a month for 100 hours, $99.99 for 250, or $399.99 for 1,000, as of November 6, 2026. You can change plans at any time.

What counts as an Xcode Cloud compute hour?

An hour of build or test time in the cloud. Apple gives the example that running five tests of 12 minutes each uses one compute hour.

Is Xcode Cloud cheaper than a dedicated Mac?

For small apps, yes. If your builds fit in the 25 included hours, Xcode Cloud costs nothing extra. Past that, 250 hours for $99.99 costs about the same as a MacMetro Mac mini at $99. The dedicated Mac wins when you need other CI systems, caches that persist, or a remote desktop.

How much do GitHub Actions macOS runners cost?

A standard GitHub-hosted macOS runner, with 3 or 4 cores, M1 or Intel, costs $0.062 a minute in private repositories, as of November 6, 2026. The 12-core runner costs $0.077 and the M2 Pro runner $0.102. Public repositories use standard runners free.

Does GitHub charge for a self-hosted runner on my own Mac?

No. GitHub bills nothing for minutes on self-hosted runners, so a GitHub Actions runner on a MacMetro Mac costs only the monthly price of the Mac.

Can I use Xcode Cloud and a dedicated Mac together?

Yes. You can let Xcode Cloud handle TestFlight builds and keep a dedicated Mac for UI tests, long builds, and anything that needs custom tools.
